Subject: Re: Chameleon 4.0 opinions wanted
In article <2q6rreINNh6l@uwm.edu>, whizkid@oingomth.uwc.edu (Chris Schumann) says:
>We just purchased Chameleon 4.0 at work, and it didn't work as it was.
>The patch disk didn't ship with it, and we downloaded that today.
That figures. But they probably had a million copies manufactured all at
the same time when 4.00 was released, so that's what you got.
>Anybody else using this package?
Yup, I do. In fact, I've used Chameleon for years. Since way back to
version 2.00. I've helped them find a lot of their bugs.
>We've got a custom Windows app that requires a winsock.
Frankly, this is why I really like Chameleon: They seem to have one of the
most stable winsock.dll files around. I have never had any problem with
winsock. I use a lot of public domain software (ws_ftp, WinVN, WinTalk,
wftpd, etc.) and they all work great with this winsock.dll.
As for some of Chameleon's applications, well, there you run into problems.
Their newsreader, NewtNews, is so slow that it's useless; their ftp client
works well, but I prefer ws_ftp for its features; their ftp server has
problems and works inconsistently. If you don't use these applications
much, then no big deal.
But on the plus side, I'm constantly NFS mounted to two IBM RS6000 computers
and I *never* have problems with Chameleon; their mail program is first
rate; they've added a gopher client that works wonderfully; and their telnet
app is second to none (now that the patch is out, that is)! To me, those
are some of the most basic IP apps, and so having them work well is *very*
important. And most of all, installation and setup where so easy I thought
I had done something wrong! Can't say that about FTP Software's PC-TCP!
They also have some apps that I've never used. I don't print over a network
so I don't know if the network printer stuff works (I've read where people
have had problems, but who knows...); I don't write my own scripts, so the
script editor is of no value to me; finger and whois I guess work OK, but I
don't really use them; and I don't do any network admin stuff, so the SNMP
is meaningless. Another downside is if you need to maintain net connectivity
in DOS (which I don't), then you have to get a second package from them.
Chameleon is 100% Windows DLLs.
So, all in all, I give NetManage a B. Some things are A+ (NFS, Mail, Telnet,
installation and setup), one is F (NewtNews); everything else is around a B.
>Does Microsoft have one?
Don't know.

Subject: wslpd
Has anyone had any luck using wslpd1.1. I got the text printing fine
but the raw print spooler just spools the job and sits there. It does not
print the job and no error messages appear either. It does not allow
me to select the printer either. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes - by using tnstart.exe you can let *another* application start a telnet
session for you (e.g. gopher+).

To have a POP3 server, wouldn't you also need an SMTP server?
